WA FLORAL ART SOCIETY INC WORKSHOP -  'PHOTO GALLERY'

'ITALIAN LAYERED DESIGN - VERTICAL (D)'

A workshop on the 'ITALIAN LAYERED DESIGN - VERTICAL (D)' was conducted on Saturday the 9th August 2008.   This workshop was conducted by Debbie Skroza and Julia Wates  who provided information and instructions on how to create these stunning designs.

Members thoroughly enjoyed this workshop further enhancing their floral skills in floral design and creating a variety of arrangements.

Notes extracted from the section on ‘Italian Designs’ in the AFAA Manual page 67 (see other notes pertaining to Italian Designs from page 65-68)

LAYERED DESIGN – VERTICAL

This is a “free design”. Use as many materials as you wish. No specific grouping.  Delicate materials may be used.  Containers – either traditional or modern but not urn shaped.  Basic concept is the super-imposition of different layers/surfaces on each other – horizontally, vertically, diagonally. Begin at the back of the design and establish height and line.  No focal point.

Suggested Plant Materials:

Linear forms (most important) Flax, bark, bamboo, reeds, gymea, strelitzia, aspidistra, calla, canna, cordilyne, philodendron, sansevieria, fern, Erica, stems, steel/bear grass, long pods, bulrushes, clipped palm, conifer, veneer, anthurium flowers, weathered and other wood.  Moss or similar to finish the design.

Choose a selection of these or other similar, linear forms to create the basis of your vertical design, giving special consideration to the colour, texture and form (length, width) and how you will be able to place them in your design.

Accent Forms

These will create the visual interest areas' in your design.

Remember that the overall effect has to be vertical so you won't want to create a dominate focal area(s).  These accent forms will help draw the eye along the vertical plane and either contrast or harmonise with your linear materials.

Hosta, figularia, berbabia, anthurium and philodendron leaves, orchids, chrysanthemums, carnations, roses, celosia, strelitzia, some fruits and vegetables could be suitable.  Linear banksias could also be effective.
