WEST AUSTRALIAN FLORAL ART SOCIETY 2007 STATE
CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITIONS
The very successful WA Floral
Art Society 2007 State Championships for Floral Art competitions
were again
staged at the Atwell Gallery in Alfred Cove on the 18th & 19th of
October and open to the public for viewing on the19th, 20th & 21st
October 2007. This
event included an 'Open
Championship Class' were any floral designer was able to enter and two other classes restricted to members of this society only
titled 'Contemporary Wreath'
and a 'suspended class' titled 'Going Down'.
These competitions not only
highlighted the talent of floral designers around this state but also provided
an excellent opportunity to promote the WA Floral Art Society and our art form
and the response from the general public and our membership was fantastic.
Hundreds
of people
passed through the doors to view these wonderful displays, with many openly
expressing their admiration to the exhibitors for their artistic and creative
designing skills - and the many comments recorded in our ‘Guest
Book’ is a testament to their appreciation.
Congratulations are extended to
everyone who ‘took up the challenge’ and staged designs at these
competitions – although only a few are able to receive prizes – the viewing
public commented that 'they were all winners for taking the
opportunity to compete and enter designs of such a high standard at this
prestigious event'.
One of our most 'Active Senior' members Joan
Boorman, was awarded a 2nd place for her design in the 'Going' Down N/R'
class - a wonderful effort and an inspiration to many.
The 'Official Opening' of this years event
was launched by the Mayor of Melville Katie Jackson who 'congratulate
everyone who staged a design at these competitions'.
This
prestigious event saw three classes
being staged for competitions.

Report
by Rika Hudson
(Winner of the 2007 WA Floral Art
Society State Championship competition)
This
was my first ‘Open Championship Class’ and also my first time to
make a large piece, however, I still decided to enter. I had a flood of
questions – what design; what scale; type of frame work; choice of plant
materials; and so on. (Thanks Dianne for your advice).
I
was inspired to portray an Asian taste, and so decided to use Bamboo poles,
bringing in a hand-made wire net that I recently learned how to make. Overall
my idea was to keep the arrangement as simple as possible.
First
I thought I would make a large wire net to hang over the bamboo, but since the
bamboo is straight while the net is curved, if I had done that, I would have
lost the strong bamboo's straight line. Then I considered placing the flowers
on the wire net, but it would have lacked some interesting elements for the
design. Finally I decided to incorporate wheat into my design. I tried to knit
the wheat together, but the wheat broke! What could I do, all of my ideas had
failed. I eventually bound the wheat together with the wire, and this looked
interesting. This gave me the confidence to find suitable plant material to
match the design and colour theme.
I
would like to say a big thanks to everybody who supported and pushed me. Thanks
also to the West Australian Floral Art Society Inc for giving me the
opportunity.
I learned a lot and enjoyed it.
Thank you very much.
