This Society conducts the annual 'West Australian Floral Art Society Inc State Championship for Floral Art' in this state. This event is usually conducted towards the end of each year.

2003 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR FLORAL ART
The West Australian Floral Art Society Inc 2003 State Championship for Floral Art Competitions were staged on Thursday the 23rd October and were open to the public from Friday the 24th October until Sunday the 26th October 2003.
This year the Atwell Gallery in Canning Highway, Alfred Cove was selected as a venue, providing an appropriate setting for floral artists to stage and present their designs. This prestigious event showcased the talents of floral artists from around this state, where an array of stunning floral designs were staged in the 'Open' Championship Class providing admirers of floral art with a magnificent display. These diverse designs with many extending to some 180cm (6 ft) in height, included stunning horizontal displays, lush tropical designs, innovative contemporary exhibits and several design using minimal materials.
The West Australian Floral Art Society Inc 2003 State Championship for Floral Art was awarded to Eileen Wenn who created a beautifully executed horizontal design incorporating Waratahs, red Roses, green Carnations, Heliconias, Apples, Anthuriums and Bark. Joyce VanKleef was awarded the 2nd place with her innovative design utilising minimal materials of capsicums and foliages. The 3rd place was awarded to Julia Wates who incorporated the black and green kangaroo paws and xanthorrhea grasses. A Highly Commended award was presented to Minh Tran.
'Pave' and 'Strata' were the two other classes staged during this event, which were restricted to members of the WA Floral Art Society Inc. The class titled 'Pave' saw Joyce VanKleef being awarded the 1st place with her design incorporating cut Banksias and a variety of nuts from Australian native trees. The 2nd place was awarded to Jean Shine, 3rd Place to Mary Liew and a Highly Commended to Kay Robinson. Awards in the other class titled 'Strata' were, 1st place to Coralie Shattock who included Leucospermum and bark, 2nd place to Dianne Buckles and 3rd place to Joyce VanKleef.
The official opening of this event was held on Friday the 24th October with Her Worship the Mayor of Melville, Katherine Jackson JP, officially opening and presenting Awards and Certificates of Participation to the floral artists who staged exhibits in the 'Open' Championship Class. The WA Floral Art Society Inc Patron, Mrs Joan Tonkin MBE, also attended the opening and presented Awards and Certificates of Participation to other exhibitors in the other two classes.
Many hundreds of delighted visitors attended this event, which was open to the public for three days, with many taking the time to record their appreciation in the 'Visitors Book. A few of the comments taken from this book are :

State Championship for Floral Art’
The 2006 West Australian Floral Art Society Inc State Championship for
Floral Art Competitions will be staged on Thursday the
23rd November and open to the public after judging on Friday the 24th November until Sunday the
26th October 2006 from 10.00am till 4.00pm daily. An Invitation is extended to all floral
artists and the general public to visit the Atwell Gallery in Canning
Highway (near the junction of Canning Highway and North Lake Road–river side),
Alfred Cove during these three days, where floral artists will stage and
present their stunning floral designs. This prestigious event will showcase the
talent of floral artists from around this state, where an array of stunning
floral designs will be staged in the ‘Open’ Championship Class
– with some designs extending to 180cm (6 ft) in height, ensuring admires of
floral design will be delighted with these magnificent displays. With several
other classes (restricted to members of the WA Floral Art Society) including the
beautiful ‘TAPESTRY (D)’ design and the interpretative subject
of ‘BAMBOOZLED’, being offered as
competitive classes a very colourful and diverse array of styles will create a
stunning feast of floral delights. The official opening of these State
Championship competitions will be held on Friday the 24th November
with Her Worship the Mayor of Melville, Katherine Jackson JP, officially opening
and presenting Awards to the floral artists who staged exhibits in the 'Open'
Championship Class. The WA Floral Art Society Inc Patron,
Mrs Joan Tonkin MBE, will also attend the opening and present Awards and

COMPETITOR INFORMATION AND REGULATIONS 2006 WEST AUSTRALIAN FLORAL ART SOCIETY STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR FLORAL ART COMPETITIONS 1.
Originality –
designs should be original and copies will be down pointed. (It is not
considered ethical to exhibit copies of designs of your own, or others). 2.
An exhibit is made of plant
material, with or without accessories. 3.
Plant material must predominate
over all other components of the exhibit. 4.
The use of artificial plant
materials is not permitted. 5.
Fresh plant material must be in
water or water retaining material unless such material remains turgid throughout
the event. 6.
Painted and/or artificially
coloured plant material may be used. 7.
Exhibits
in classes A, B & C will be judged by West Australian Floral Art Society Inc
qualified Floral Art Judges using the points system documented in the Australian
Floral Art Association (AFAA)Manual (see page 160).
Classes A & C are to be viewed and Judged from the front. The
decision of the Judges will be final. 8.
The
Society reserves the right to restrict the number of exhibits according to the
space provided. 9.
If insufficient entries are
received for a particular class then the Society reserves the right to restrict
awards to 1st and 2nd placings. 10.
The
Championship Class (Class A) must be constructed on site under competition
status. 11.
Classes B
& C (restricted to members of the WA Floral Art Society) may be constructed
off site and brought to the venue for staging in the allocated area.
12.
All entries must be lodged on the ‘Competition
Form’ (please
take a copy for your records) and forwarded to Chief Steward Joan Boorman, 27a
Eastlands Street, Dianella WA 6059 (Ph 9345 2470). Other queries regarding these classes
should be directed through the Chief Steward. 13.
Competitors
are requested to ensure that no water damages the floor and that worksheets/drop
sheets must be used during competition. 14.
Competitors in the Championship
Class (Class A) should ensure they fully understand the rules of this
competition, especially Point
22*. 15.
Competitors are requested to be
considerate of fellow competitors when staging and to contain equipment within
own specified area when staging. 16.
Only
competitors and officials are allowed in the competition areas during staging
& judging. 17.
Staging times indicated must
include any time required for clean up of your area. 18.
All materials (plant &
staging) must be onsite at the commencement of competition and cannot be sourced
during competition. 19.
Championship
exhibits Class A: Own bases, backgrounds and base covers permitted if contained
within specified area, but may not be attached to any part of the building. 20.
NO AEROSOL/SPRAY painting
permitted in the venue. 21.
No help may be given regarding
preparation or construction of an exhibit except if required to lift a heavy
object, and then only at the discretion of an official. 22.
*Competitors
may use pre-constructed or prewoven plant material, however
it must not be predominant in the exhibit. 23.
Late
arrivals in Classes A should note: Entry after 5.00pm will only be permitted at
6.00pm and again at 7.00pm – to avoid disrupting other competitors. 24.
If an exhibit or part of an
exhibit collapses after staging time (but before Judging) this design will not
be included in the Judging and marked as ‘Display Only’. The
competitor will be invited to re-do this design for display purposes only. 25.
A design must not be changed in
anyway after it has been judged. 26.
All competitors’ property is at their own risk and they must
be responsible for their own insurance if deemed necessary. The WA Floral Art
Society Inc and the Atwell Gallery do not accept any liability for loss or
damage to any of the competitors’ property. 27.
Comment Cards will be provided
for all competitors in all classes. 28.
Dismantling of exhibits
commences at 4.00pm on Sunday the 26th November 2006.

CLASS A 2006 WEST AUSTRALIAN FLORAL ART SOCIETY INC STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR FLORAL ART N/R Open
to any Floral Designer
An
exhibit of ‘Your Own Choice’ staged on a floor space not to exceed
122cm x 122cm to be viewed from the front.
Class ‘B’ ‘TAPESTRY (D)’ Only members of the West Australian Floral Art Society Inc are eligible to enter this class.
Staging will be provided for these exhibits. Designs in this class must be constructed offsite and brought to the venue for staging on the day of competition. Finished
design should not exceed 50cm in width and 50cm in depth.
Class ‘C’ ‘BAMBOOZLED’ Only members of the West Australian Floral Art Society Inc are eligible to enter this class.
Designs may be constructed offsite and brought the the venue for staging or can be completed onsite. Designs will be staged on tall metals stands - topped with a black board measuring 50 x 50. The finished design should not exceed 60cm in width and 60cm in depth
Height restrictions apply in Classes A & C - Class A is 244cm and Class C 150cm
