CARLA BARBAGLIA (pietra Ligure Italy) DEMONSTRATION

Notes extracted from the Floral Design Council of SA Inc Programme.

Carla is a Teacher and Demonstrator of I.I.D.F.A. Sanremo, (the Italian Institute of Flower Arranging for Amateurs) where she learnt floral art in the early 1980's.  She was born and still lives in Pietra Ligure, a seaside resort on the Ligurian Riviera near the French Border.  She holds a degree in foreign literature and languages from the University of Genoa and teaches in a High School.

A lover of cats and all animals, birdwatcher and keen gardener, she holds national collection of Hellebores, (the largest in Italy).  Carla has taken part in WAFA Seminars since Toronto and has attended the WAFA World Shows since Paris 1990.  In New Zealand 1996 she represented Italy in the Honorary Exhibition.  As a competitor she has received awards in Italy and abroad winning the Gold at Monte Carlo for four consecutive years.  She has tutored and demonstrated extensively abroad, in Britain, Pakistan, Malta, Ireland, Uruguay, Barbados, Kenya, South Africa, New Zealand, Bermuda, and in the USA, (for Californian mother's country).

Carla provided wonderful demonstrations and received a standing ovation for her diverse floral designs.

Information extracted from the AFAA Manual Pages 65-68

ITALIAN DESIGNS

Styles are well-defined and structural, can be elegant, stylised, bold, flamboyant and sculptural.  Characteristics include the use of bold plant forms, the grouping of one type of material to form a larger mass which is never flat, manipulation of foliages (especially) to create new forms, strong outlines, strength emphasised by well-defined plant material, simple and stretched lines. Texture and colour contrasts are essential.  Containers are usually modern but can be “old” if they have a linear, well-defined form which can often be the inspiration for the design.  The container is important and its size and visual weight dictate the final dimensions of the design although the plant material still dominates.  In many styles no more than four or five different types of plant material are used.  Many designs may be viewed from any angle.  There is always unity and harmony between the container and other components in the design.  Some other information about some of the Modern Styles is as follows:

Free Style, Non-Realistic Design

Linear, neat form, strong and dominant line, repeated with different materials; bold materials with contrasting forms and textures. Contrasts should be strong but not in both texture and form in the one design.  Interesting effects can be achieved by careful choice of differing plant materials.  Colour contrast is essential.  Flowers are important for their colour; different types, or shades/ tints of the same type of flower create depth and movement but too many colours create confusion.  Rhythm also comes with repetition of lines, alternating with space.  The design may be symmetrical but asymmetry is often more interesting.  It is better to use no more than four different types of material to avoid possible confusion.  Odd or even number of pieces of plant material may be used.  Originality – achieving something new is the aim.

Layered Design - Horizontal

Interest is created by contrasts of forms – concave, convex, wavy, etc., colours – light/dark, warm/cool, and textures – dull/shiny etc.  Layers can be of materials in their usual forms as in nature or of materials artificially created, e.g. sticks covered in wood shavings.  Dried and fresh materials may be used in the one arrangement. Some non-vegetable material (e.g. manufactured) may be used. Placement of flowers is very important.  Stems may be used to create a layer, or hidden.

Layered Design - Vertical

This is a “free design”. Use as many materials as you wish. No specific grouping.  Delicate materials may be used.  Containers – either traditional or modern but not urn shaped.  Basic concept is the super-imposition of different layers/surfaces on each other – horizontally, vertically, diagonally. Begin at the back of the design and establish height and line.  No focal point.
