SPECIAL
CHRISTMAS DEMONSTRATION
by
Special Demonstrator
ANITA
ORRELL

Christmas
Demonstration 2011
Themed:
STARRY
STARRY CHRISTMAS
The
December Christmas demonstration for 2011 was provided by one of WA’s emerging
young floral designers Annita Orrell. Annita is a practicing commercial
florist working at Flowers in the Garden in Booragoon and also a casual lecturer
at Challenger Institute of Technology.
Annita
brought youth and enthusiasm to the demonstration and many of her designs had a
natural feel and look to them with lots of ideas and tips from Annita on how to
make these designs long lasting using materials that can be continually replaced
to extend the life of the arrangements with only minimal amounts of oasis
throughout all of her designs. Many of the designs used ecco brick as a base to
support the structures and alternatives to oasis were acrylic water vials.
Annita’s
arrangements were scaled from small to large, beginning with a table design in a
long ceramic container featuring constructed triangular bamboo Christmas trees
then using lentils in the base as an alternative to moss. The technique of
winding predominated in her table Christmas tree once again in a very natural
look using lapping cane then beautiful natural white wool that is a new season
product from overseas. Wool was also used in a long table arrangement where
cardboard was bound in maroon and brown wool this design was freestanding on
acrylic water vials and decorated in golden orchids to give a warm Christmas
feel, and true to her theme, there were textured stars of all types from cut out
sandpaper to decorated wooden stars.
As
Annita herself said, being a small person, much of her work is detailed and
compact however she did create two outstanding large Christmas wreaths, her
natural selections were to use pressed gold to brown coconut fibre - one wreath
was assisted by Jeannette Hudson cutting hundreds of tiny square shapes then
glued onto the wreath and the other was made from a structure of brown corkwood
sticks including star anise, cinnamon sticks, grape vine and succulents to
highlight the detail in both of these designs.
Sincere
thanks is extended to Annita and she is to be congratulated on her beautiful
Christmas presentation on the day, her creative interpretation of the spirit of
Christmas and her wonderful caring and generous personality, which emphasised
the Society’s ethos of promoting Friendship through Flowers.

KNIGHT
Report
on Dorothy Knight's special floral demonstration titled
'BIG
BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL'
(Compiled
by Jan Steele)
(This
report provides details on each of Dorothy's floral designs highlighted
above)
For
our “At Home” meeting in June, Dorothy Knight from Ilrymple in
north west Victoria provided us with an extremely interesting
demonstration illustrating that one can work inexpensively with foliage, a
minimum of flowers and materials from our surroundings that will not cost
anything. .
A tall container in brownish tones was used in this
piece to use up the pieces left over from the other designs. Strelitzia
flowers, Iris, Lilium, purple tipped white chrysanthemum, ginger leaves,
aspidistra, rosemary and flax were combined to produce a beautifully
harmonious arrangement which illustrated the true environmentalist at
work.
Strongly
swirling vine around had reminded Dorothy of Cyclone Yasi. Dorothy
skilfully threaded reddish flax leaves and some dark purple Lisianthus
through the vine. To one side of this some dark purple Iris were grouped
then around the Iris were placed beautiful orange Liliums. This was
then hung on a conveniently placed “wall”.
Dorothy
used another one of Denise’s unusual containers to which she attached
scrolls of eucalypt bark. She then added to the side
some boab nuts which she had found on her trip to Broome, then some coiled
aspidistra leaves at the top and filled the holes with Zanadu.
Unbelievably simple but so effective.
Using
more vine from her son’s garden, Dorothy swirled it around a container
the shape and size of a pumpkin. It became a bird’s
nest. Threaded through this vine were long pieces of soft foliage to give
some green and beautiful dusty pink tulips. Three small reddish strelitzia
buds, representing the up stretched heads of three small birds were placed
in the centre. Reddish toned Leucadendrons were used in and around the
birds to finish off the nest.
Two
full oasis were placed end on end then wrapped around with tatami made by
binding the stems of home grown papyrus grass formed a
simple column. Into the top Dorothy placed cream roses at different
lengths, some were bought but she stuck to the philosophy and used garden
grown iceberg roses also. Roses were then brought down the column slightly
winding toward the other side to meet others winding up from the bottom.
Three
bamboo poles were tied together and fixed to a base of this floor
arrangement. Oasis was fixed about one third the way up, another
piece was placed opposite two thirds the way up. Elephant ears, anthurium
leaves, ginger, long aspidistra formed the leafy base on each piece of
oasis. The lower arrangement was smaller and represented Victoria,
the larger one was WA . Strelitzia, orange gerberas, and
orange liliums were then placed.. An interesting contrast was formed by
some stems of purple tipped white chrysanthemum. The two
arrangements were joined together by a curve of grass tree leaves.
A
tall white container was used to illustrate a piece inspired by
Dorothy’s grandchildren at their ballet class. Oasis was placed in a
close fitting saucer which could be lifted out to be transported intact.
Into this was placed a piece of twisted willow almost the same
height as the container. Four small spoon shaped strelitzia leaves
were placed high but at slightly different levels to represent the up
stretched arms of little ballerinas. Dorothy divided a medium
sized montsteria leaf into sections. These were placed low around the
oasis with some ribbon trimmed tulle to form the tu tu. Zanadu and
pink Lisianthus were placed high and low with dusty pink
Lilium in the focal area to finish off a lovely design.
A
very big Thank You to Dorothy for providing this wonderful demonstration
at our special June 'At Home' Meeting. |
