Report
from Flower Designers’ Club of Bunbury - 40th
Anniversary We recently held our 2005 Annual Floral Art Exhibition and Championships. Our Club's 40th Anniversary ‘Floral Cake’ was stunning, Designed and created by all Club Members it was over 2 meters high – an 8 tiered floral delight rich in ruby red roses, apples, amaranthus - love lies bleeding, green sims, echivera, other succulents and foliage. A rose bud chandelier cascaded from the ceiling over the floral cake. It was a stunning sight in the Chapel Gallery of our old converted Catholic Convent building. We are so lucky to have the stunning Bunbury Regional Art Galleries venue to show off our flowers in a very professional way. We were open for 5 days and the community response was fantastic - 190 visitors to the gallery every day for the 5 days. Blooming Art is a section where invited local identities interpret an artwork from the city collection with their own floral design. These
people have no flower arranging experience and the results are just stunning.
The winner of Viewer's choice this year was Dave Doherty - a metal fabricator -
his floral design was amazing in a pave' style - one would have expected a top
designer to have done this. TAFE Certificate 4 Floristry students did an outdoor installation - A Fantasy Ocean Scene - this included a stunning life sized mermaid, her tail crafted in protea pin-cushion leaves and her hair in amaranthus, a seagull, starfish and other creatures of the sea were staged under ‘Echo’ the Boat sculpture in the front garden at the galleries. The Bunbury Regional Art Galleries Floral Art Championship was a highlight of our exhibition, with the 1st place going to me this year which was very exciting in our clubs 40th Anniversary year.
The Club’s Patron Mrs Manea opened the show and welcomed founding member Mrs Jean Piper who cut the ‘real cake’ and other former members including Daphne Firns and Joan Cook to our 15th annual exhibition.
A ‘Thank you’ was made to the Members of the WA Floral Art Society for all their assistance over the years with many ladies taking turns to travel to Bunbury each month to demonstrate and judge. Club President Jean Shine presented a ‘Life Membership’ to me for my contribution to our club over 24 years. While totally surprised and humbly proud, I thanked them while saying the Floral Art Club had given me so many wonderful friends and opportunities over all the years. Flower Arranging is a part of my life and family and I will continue to share the joy of creating with nature with them. I felt very young to be a ‘life member’ and promised I would be around for a long time yet! A sincere thank you to all the WA Floral Art Society Members who came to the Opening Celebration or travelled down over the weekend to visit our exhibition and share our special celebration year. Trophy donated by the West Australian Floral Art Society Inc Report compiled by Past President Eileen Wenn
The Flower Designers' Club of Bunbury awarded the '2003 WA Floral Art Society Inc Trophy' to Dorothy Fowler for her continued contribution and many years of commitment to The Flower Designers' Club of Bunbury.
Dorothy has been a Treasurer and member for at least 20 + years, always willing to 'have a go' and exhibit on the monthly benches and compete at flower shows and club championship competitions held at the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery. Dorothy has a lovely reputation for staging 'Interpretive Designs' with song titles like "Lets Twist Again", which is a subject that stays in my memory from many years ago and uses flowers and foliage from her garden.
Together Dorothy and her late husband Eustice, built the most beautiful garden at their home in the Ferguson Valley. Their garden is often open for different charities and the 'Open Garden Scheme'. A very friendly member who loves her flowers and garden and s a very worthy recipient of the 2003 West Australian Floral Art Trophy to Affiliated Clubs.
The presentation was made during the end of year 'Christmas Luncheon' held at the Harvey Country Rose Tea Gardens on Thursday the 20th November 2003. Other presentations were also made to President Jean Shine, Secretary Carol Turner and Past President Eileen Wenn.
Members, 'Friends of the Club' and guests enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon of floral art, fellowship and fun in this delightful country cafe.
