REPORT:

Compiled by Dianne Buckles 19/9/2010 - Chairperson of the 'Floral Rendezvous 2010' Show Committee & President WA Floral Art Society

Greetings Flower Friends

As blue skies shine over Perth and 'Floral Rendezvous 2010' fades into but a memory - all that remains for me as Chairperson of the 'Floral Rendezvous 2010' Show Committee, is to extend CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS to everyone who was involved with the prestigeous 4th Australian Floral Design Convention.

To those who travelled from the Eastern States and overseas we thank you for participating in this National Convention and hope your time in Western Australia was an enjoyable one - and you will take happy memories of your special ‘Rendezvous’ in Perth.

The West Australian Floral Art Society members while working hard for the last 3 years to financially support this convention, also looked forward to welcoming you and extending ‘Friendship Through Flowers’ - and so on behalf of them, I thank you for your enthusiasm and delight in sharing this special time with us and we wish you well with your floral pursuits in the future.

Championship 1st place & Best Use of Colour Award to Debbie Skroza WAFirstly I must congratulate everyone who took the challenge and staged designs at the BOULEVARD CENTRE in Floreat - what a fantastic display of creative designs.  The diversity of designs staged in the 15 Competitive Classes was a credit to everyone concerned, and along with the 7 AFAA State Member exhibits, the 4 WA Floral Art Society Affiliated Clubs Exhibits, the NAFAS display and other display exhibits, all provided a 'Floral Feast' for those who appreciate the 'Beauty of Nature' - and this wonderful exhibition was the perfect way to promote our ART FORM to the wider community.

The overwhelming response from those who visited the exhibition on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, was fantastic - with an admiring public in awe of the creative skills of floral designers - and with many asking that ‘their appreciation be recorded and forward on to such a wealth of talented designers’ - and so it is with much pleasure that I extend to you their thanks and admiration of your wonderful contributions and outstanding workmanship

I would also like to extend congratulations to those who were fortunate in being awarded prizes, especially Debbie Skroza (1st place in the Championship class and Best Use of Colour - see image left) and to Claire Robins (see above for her 1st place in the 'Haute Couture' Fashion Class (Plus Best In Show and Best Use of Foliage Award) and while not everyone was able to receive an award please be aware that the public all saw you as WINNERS.   Graham Godwin and his staff at the Boulevard Centre must also be congratulated on their fantastic service and the venue suited our exhibition so well.  The Floristry Students who created the '4 Seasons Mannequin Displays' are also thanked as their designs staged at the Floreat Forum Shopping Centre directed much of the public to our exhibition.

Secondly thanks are extended to our 2 workshop tutors of Noreen Donovan and Clement Lee who delighted their audiences with their designing skills and I am sure both Participants and Observers appreciated these well organised workshops.

Congratulations are also extended to the 7 AFAA State Demonstrators (Denise Shelbourn, Marie Lenon, Gail Anderson, Sue Fingleton Marleen Pratt OAM, Norma Gordon and Glenda Nielsen) who provided mini demonstrations under the theme of 'From Around This Country'  and took their audience on journeys to each of their states - what a delightful lead up to the spectacular demonstrations provided by our international Demonstrator Hitomi Gilliam AIFD.

 Hitomi Gillaim AIFD Demonstration piece

ARTFLOR – what a wonderful demonstration - Hitomi Gilliam AIFD enchanted her audience from her very first piece and kept everyone enthralled with her stunning designs.  How lucky we were to secure such a master of floral design, who not only enthused us with her creative skills, but her willingness to share her knowledge was inspirational.   Thank You Hitomi you were such a very special lady and your time with us will be long remembered. Thanks are also extended to Debbie, Eileen, Kay, Jean and Claire who worked assisting Hitomi prepare for these special demonstrations – I am sure they also appreciated the opportunity to work with such a creative designer. Hitomi’s two special MasterClass Workshops  also provided unique opportunities for attendees to experience the techniques Hitomi has spoken of during her demonstrations.   Special

The 2 evenings set aside to formally recognise and celebrate ‘Floral Rendezvous 2010’ were the special Opening and Prize Presentation Evening and the Gala Dinner – both which were masterfully steered by our MC Jack Shelbourn and provided opportunities to acknowledge everyone’s contributions and it was wonderful to see so many people relaxing and enjoying these times, were old friendships were renewed and make new acquaintances established.

Julie who had just flown in from Canberra, graciously presented award winning recipients with their prizes and later wandered the exhibition congratulating floral artists on their creative designs.  Thank you Julie  for being a part of this prestigious event and ope

A HUGE Congratulations is extended to the 13 ‘Floral Rendezvous 2010’ Sub Committee Team Leaders who together with their teams worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this event. As you all reflect on the past few days, may you all ENJOY, BE VERY PROUD of your achievements and realise that all your hard work was appreciated. To the wonderful setup teams (and dismantling teams), competition stewards and the judges who offered their time and expertise a huge vote of thanks.

In closing I would also like to thank the many members, husbands, family and friends who offered their time in stewarding at the Boulevard (and the Rendezvous Hotel) – what a mammoth task with the hundreds of people who eagerly awaited the opening at the Boulevard each day and entry to the 2 large demonstrations, 3 workshops and 2 special Masterclass workshops.  To those who came to visit our Exhibition we also appreciated your support as well and hope you enjoyed the creative talent of floral artists around Australia.

In the 'Welcome Letter' I compiled for the Registration Bags, I included some words of wisdom for us to consider and as ‘Floral Rendezvous 2010’ came and went, these words were something that became a reality - and so to you all - THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT OF FLORAL ART AND PARTICIPATING IN ‘FLORAL RENDEZVOUS 2010’.

Those words that I wrote of – and which I believe came to fruition during this event, read as follows:

As You Learn                      TEACH Hitomi Gilliam AIFD Demonstration piece

     As You Get                           GIVE

     As You Receive                  DISTRIBUTE

     Sharing                                 MULTIPLIES THE JOY

Kindness                             CANNOT BE GIVEN, IT ALWAYS COMES BACK

It has been an honour over the last 3 years to plan, lead and implement ‘Floral Rendezvous 2010’ and again I THANK EVERYONE FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS, and wish you well and look forward to meeting again in the near future as we extend 'Friendship Through Flowers'.

Kind regards

Dianne Buckles (19/9/2010)

General comments received on 'Floral Rendezvous 2010'

This was the first national level show I had attended and I was absolutely amazed at the exhibits, both in the competitions and the demonstrations and workshops. What a fantastic few days of floral fun we all enjoyed. I thought the floral carpet in the neighbouring church was just the icing on the cake! by  Pamela Heath

A most memorable time spent in your city.  We have all played our part and none as professional as the organizers. You have brought the curtain down with standing accolades. Well done and congratulations

Congratulations Dianne to you and your committee from FASQ. What a wonderful memory we have been left with. The professional approach and organization of the convention is to be commended.  Hitomi was awe inspiring with her extreme dedication and knowledge which she willingly imparted.   Thank you for this experience

It was a fabulous occasion, organised as we would have expected, nothing lacking and everyone made so welcome.

When we heard the interview on ABC Radio we couldn't resit the visit and were so amazed and delighted by the the incredible work - well done to everyone

The event was magnificent

A GREAT  BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE. Loved it ,loved it, loved it

I wish it could have gone for another week so I could have gone back to just sit and contemplate the talent we have in Australia

have just been to the display in Floreat, and it is absolutely fantastic.

I couldn't believe one of the tables was done by such a young person - fantastic job to the organisers - best we have seen

Thanks to the WA Floral Art Society - for giving me so many occasions to join in with workshops demos.  Hitomi was the best demonstration I have seen

Thanks to the committee who must have spent many months preparing for this convention - They must be very proud of the outcome and while I was at the centre the public just couldn't believe such a beautiful exhibition was possible.

Dianne Congrats on your achievements and the attention to detail and professionalism was outstanding - loved every minute of the whole convention.

Hitomi was unbelievable - thanks WA floral Art Society for the opportunity to observe at her workshop - a great honour

I have been given your email, as I wanted to say how impressed I was with what I saw in Floreat - my friends and I had no idea the exhibition was going to be this great and if you get a chance to thank people can you please pass on our appreciation to the ladies who did the designs - WOW, INCREDIBLE, AMAZING - THANK YOU.

I am so proud to be a Western Australian and been part of this amazing event-Thanks to the Society committee for their work over the last 3 years - you did it and because of you we can all be proud

JUST INSPIRING AND SO VERY VERY CREATIVE - well done

We will be following up with membership

Wish I had entered now - well done to those who put up in the competitions

Thanks to the organisers - WHAT A GREAT FEW DAYS OF FLOWERS - please pass on my respect to Hitomi for her wonderful demonstrations

Loved the Expo - Perth did it well and on a world standard !!

I wish we could have purchased some of the displays - the handbags and necklaces were stunning - well done to those who put this event together and to the people who did the designs

I went to the Chelsea flower show last year, and the standard and variety I saw today far exceeds what I saw over there in the floral art section.  Today’s visit was very inspirational on many levels, and the comments that I heard from the public were mainly of awe!  I can’t begin to imagine how busy you have been organising this (and no doubt still are), but you have really done a brilliant job.

Thank you Dianne, I know how much time over the last 3 years you dedicated to this project and I am sure everyone associated with it is extremely proud of the outcome

What an amazing show

WELL DONE TO EVERYONE WHO DID A DESIGN

This has been the best floral event I have seen in WA - well done to the organisers

I loved the experience and for the brief time I was at the Centre yesterday, the public were obviously blown away!! So complimentary. Many of my friends were SPEECHLESS. Take a bow girls

Visitors was overwhelmingly positive and congratulatory

When is the next one in Perth ? -how proud we were to have known someone who exhibited and while they didn't get a prize they were still winners along with everyone else

To our wonderful husbands and partners, a special THANK YOU - we realize you do this not for Floral Art but for "us" and it is your way of reminding us that we are special to you.

WORKSHOPS AT OBSERVATION CITY

(Report by Alison Tweedie)

The enthusiasm engendered by the chance to participate in, or observe at, a demonstration and workshop led by experts was really amazing, and all leaders made these experiences worthwhile. People loved being able to try new techniques under helpful supervision and Clement Lee, Noreen Donovan

and Hitomi Gilliam all readily assisted with tricky bits.

Each leader encouraged a fresh and lively interest in working with flowers and foliage.

How lucky we were to have the chance to take part without the need to travel interstate or overseas!

These workshops made us think and concentrate hard while still having a great time--it was a truly memorable experience! -   by Alison Tweedie

FRIDAY WITH HITOMI (Report by Kay Robinson)

.... It was indeed a privilege to be in the small team that assisted Hitomi with design mechanics as she prepared for her amazing demonstration.

She worked tirelessly to construct the many design pieces which, when completed, stunned her audience.

I admired her regard for nature and her sense of architecture as she used branches, twigs, bamboo, reeds etc. in intriguing ways to form the basic

structures for each design.

A master craftswoman of such international standing, she put us at ease and was always willing to share her knowledge and skills which was evident also in her wonderful Demonstration and Workshops. A wonderful, memorable experience!     by  Kay Robinson
