This special meeting had visitors offering appreciative comments to members on their floral expertise, their hospitality, friendly meeting, excellent demonstration and wonderful afternoon tea.  Congratulations to the competitors who created the stunning Taable Settings -  this class certainly attracted much interest and admiration. Congratulations to VALERIE ROY who was awarded the 1st place with her beautiful table setting.   The 2nd place was awarded to JULIA WATES and the 3rd place to JANE MERRALLS. These innovative table settings certainly created a  ‘focal area’ in the competitive classes and together with the other bench designs provided a beautiful display for everyone to admire and enjoy.

This meeting saw Challenger TAFE Certificate IV Floristry Students providing the special Christmas demonstration titled 'The Twelve Days of Christmas'  (to view a report and photographs of this demonstration follow this link)

Special Christmas Demonstration by Challenger TAFE Certificate IV Floristry Students

'The Twelve Days of Christmas'

Notes from demonstration at WAFAS meeting December 09

 Report compiled by Kay Robinson

A highlight of the December Christmas meeting of WA Floral Art Society was the demonstration by the talented Challenger TAFE Floristry students based on the carol ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’. Even in the introduction by Dianne, the superlatives ‘fantastic treat, delight’ were flowing describing the spectacle everyone was about to see and they were well founded.

The students were ably assisted and encouraged by senior lecturer Bev Milling, songster Doug Wenn and mannequin Amy. Each student demonstrator briefly described the inspiration for their design and techniques used for its construction and

then added horticultural material to complete the piece.

Bev’s wit and charm extended to speaking on her mobile to the partridge from the pear tree which had been delayed on the Mitchell

Freeway! The magnificent partridge constructed by Jeanette Hudson eventually made a grand and almost ethereal entrance at the end of the demonstration.

Techniques used in the designs included sausaging, tatami, binding, wrapping, finger knitting, felting, beading, waxing, and paper mache, and a vast variety of materials enhanced each one. The use of cold oasis glue enabled the students to complete their designs prior to them being paraded through the large audience for closer inspection, after which they were hung on

display in a black stage back drop. All of the designs depicting one of the gifts given to “a true love” on each of the twelve days of Christmas, contained the Elements and Principles of design. This amazing array of floral exhibits included a beautiful green hat which depicted three French hens, a stick and lichen nest bouquet for the four calling birds, a dramatic necklace piece representing the five gold rings, white milk pails encasing Sim carnations for eight maids-a-milking and a long flowing swans neck stole with tail extension, for the seven swans-a-swimming.

This truly was an inspirational and very special demonstration and the talent and skill of the students is a credit to Bev and the other TAFE lecturers present. They were all congratulated, thanked and applauded for giving to us twelve amazing gifts and a

memorable experience.

SINCERE THANKS ARE EXTENDED TO THE TALENTED STUDENTS FOR THEIR WONDERFUL DEMONSTRATIONS

Altogether a lovely demonstration to end our 2009 floral year.
