WA Floral Art Society 2007 Special Christmas Meeting  - 8th December 2007

The December meeting for this society heralds a special meeting where Annual Society Trophies are awarded to members for outstanding contributions.   This year the prestigious Society Award was won by Pene Brunning.   Our Annual Xmas Meeting also provides members and guests with a special demonstration, which was this year provided by Pene Brunning, Alison Tweedie and Jean Shine.   Please follow the links below for further information and photographs of designs staged at this meeting.

This special meeting had visitors offering appreciative comments to members on their floral expertise, their hospitality, friendly meeting, excellent demonstration and wonderful afternoon tea.  Congratulations to the competitors who created the stunning table settings in the ''PARTY SEASON N/R', this class certainly attracted much interest and admiration. Congratulations to Eileen Wenn who was awarded the 1st place with her beautiful table setting.   The 2nd place was awarded to Chris Lederer and the 3rd place to Valerie Roy. These innovative table settings certainly created a  ‘focal area’ in the competitive classes and together with the other bench designs provided a beautiful display for everyone to admire and enjoy.

This meeting saw PENE BRUNNING, JEAN SHINE & ALISON TWEEDIE providing the special Christmas demonstration titled "Christmas Season - Every Which Way"

Mrs Joan Tonkin MBE, our dedicated Society Patron, provided and presented the annual Patrons Award’ which was won this year by Lyn Fisher for her design titled 'Festive Centrepiece''.

SPECIAL CHRISTMAS DEMONSTRATION BY

PENE BRUNNING, JEAN SHINE & ALISON TWEEDIE TITLED

"Christmas Season - Every Which Way"

Notes from demonstration at WAFAS meeting December 07

 Report compiled by Pam Heath

CHRISTMAS EVERY WHICH WAY

Pene introduced the topic by saying that each of the three demonstrators would interpret the Christmas theme in a different way –

Jean – a casual country Christmas

Alison – traditional Christmas

Pene – elegant Christmas

They would unite the theme by mainly using white flowers with highlights coming from baubles, greenery and other materials.

Jean’s theme was Christmas in the patio and she commenced by creating a beautiful tall arrangement using bangalow palm spathes for a very tall arrangement which featured de-budded lime-yellow chrysanthemums to highlight the white Singapore orchids and white anthiriums set among leather fern and monsterea leaves.  For her second design Jean used matching materials but this time as a table centrepiece.  She added some Irish Rose succulent and silvery trimmed foam balls which had been covered in lamb’s ears and pearl headed pins.

Pene utilised a circular mirror as she feels we all tend to run around in circles preparing for Christmas.  Using a circular wreath she had applied silver painted rope in an evenly spaced undulating manner around its rim.  She then filled in with large white Sim carnations and trimmed this wreath with silver balls placed at differing heights.  Sprigs of dried white statics (Misty) were dotted among the other elements and when the wreath had been placed on the mirror she added three tall silver votive candle holders – again of differing heights to continue the undulating theme.  Her second design was a horizontal in a white bowl with oasis placed at different heights into which large creamy white candles were set.  The horizontal line was formed by leather fern leaves and white Singapore orchids then built up with white roses and filled in with white carnations.  Silver balls of different patterns and textures were added to either side.  This was then placed atop a tall glass tapered vase which contained some silver balls in it’s base and then several loops of silver beads were attached to the arrangement top.  Pene then sprayed a bit of sparkle on the leaves and dusted them with “snow” – made from ground polystyrene.

Alison commenced by trimming a large wreath on a triangular stand.  Greenery held in place by silver wire had been added and some trims pre-placed.  She explained how the lovely flat flowers had been made using pine-cones cut through their circumference and then dried poppy heads had been added to form the centre of each flower before spraying them with white spray paint.  She added more of these to the wreath together with white carnations.  Alison’s second design was a traditional asymmetrical arrangement on a tall silver stand with lovely greenery from her garden enhanced by the addition of white carnations, white gladioli and white lisianthus.  This was trimmed with silver baubles and she hung a silver star to add to the appearance of height of this arrangement.  Finally she added a floaty white drape from the stand which she swathed around to the front of the stand on which she placed a small traditional bowl arrangement comprising the same flowers and foliage as the large main arrangement.

Jean then showed us a wonderful triangular 2 metre tall Christmas tree the Bunbury ladies had made which was constructed of chicken wire and trimmed with “angels” made of tulle and Singapore orchids with a camellia leaf contrast.  She added a silver star and a string of lights, which ran down the inside of the middle of the tree.

Altogether a lovely demonstration to end our floral year.
